Paso Robles is wild-hearted to the core, founded in the mid-1800s by Frank and Jesse James' uncle. To this day, it's thought to be the Wild West of California's wine regions. Not surprisingly, Zinfandel, a grape with a storied past itself, was the first variety to be planted in this rough-and-tumble territory. This is a ripe, pure, medium-bodied example, with flavors of brambleberry, boysenberry and a hint of spice on the palate. Sipping this red on its own is pure delight, but it would also pair beautifully with sausages or chicken right off the grill.
