Brooklyn-based Spanish wine broker Ramon Romero – he also imports Manchego cheese and olive oil – never disappoints. Through deep family and business connections in his native Spain, he found for us an incredible Garnacha in the 2010 vintage. We didn't think he could top that, but we shouldn't have been surprised when he brought us the even-better 2011. This is just outstanding juice, made of organically grown grapes from 40-year-old vines. The grapes were planted on hillside vineyards overlooking the Tajo River, in the heart of Spain's Toledo district (Rincón del Tajo translates to "little place by the river"), so this is a more concentrated expression than the previous vintage. Yet the wine remains as elegant as it is flavorful. After your first sip, you'll wonder why you ever bother paying four times as much for big-name Châteauneufs.

Tasting Notes

Dark, inky and plummy, even wine nerds could confuse these powerful, rich aromas for a Châteauneuf three times the price. Loaded with classic, ripe Garnacha flavors of violet and red and black berries, this wine coats your palate completely. The acidity and tannins from four months of aging in oak bring the wine to a lush, enjoyable finish. This is truly delicious juice as only old vines can deliver.
