A beast of a Zin at a meek price

Drink this: Now through 2018
Alcohol: 14.8%

Stock up on the kind of wine that drinks as easily on its own as it does with Buffalo wings, barbecue and anything else that's bold-flavored, palate-scorching and blood-thickening. You can't do much better than this Zin, sourced from 65-year-old vines and aged for just under a year in French oak. This is one bad-ass Zin, and you won't be able to find anything comparable for less than fifty bucks a bottle. For significantly less than that you get plenty of power and flavor – even cellarability. And if you can manage to keep your paws off a bottle or two, this Zin will be a beauty in two or three years. But we can hardly blame you for wanting to tear through all four bottles after your very first sip. We'd do the same.

Tasting Notes

Powerful Port-like characteristics fill the glass – the room, really – the instant you pull the cork. You'll find bold aromas of rich, dark berry, layers of spice, plum, pepper and vanilla, all balanced with a light hint of toasted oak. The juicy and fruity palate reveals wonderful complexity, with berry bramble, coffee, dried herbs and spiced chocolate characters – with a maraschino cherry on top. Silky tannins and a rich, lingering finish follow. Drinking deliciously today, the wine should develop for another five to seven years.
