Judy Jordan followed in her famous father’s footsteps in more ways than one. After graduating from Stanford University with a degree in Earth Sciences/Geology, she wanted to take her tremendous knowledge of rocks, soil and earth and apply it to another great love of hers, wine. Much like her father Tom Jordan, a world-renowned Geologist and founder of the celebrated Jordan Winery, Judy wanted her own piece of land from which to build her life’s dream and she found it in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma.

J Vineyards & Winery began in 1986 as a producer of critically-acclaimed sparkling wines like the J Vintage Brut, J Late-Disgorged Vintage Brut, Brut Rosé, and Cuvée 20 Brut. However, Judy, always curious and innovating, came to the realization that her vineyards would also be ideal for producing site-specific, cool-climate Russian River Valley varietal wines like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris, as well as the highly lauded sparkling wines.

The 1997 Late-Disgorged Brut is the pinnacle of J’s Sparkling wine efforts. The blend was assembled in December of 1997, cold stabilized and then bottled over the spring of 1998. The wines then patiently aged for an extended period of eight years in naturally cool underground cellars. In 2006, riddling began to remove the yeast sediment responsible for the aging character. A dosage liqueur was prepared from a blend of cask-aged, reserve wines and finished with pure cane sugar and added to the individual bottles. After the wine was finally disgorged, it was aged for an additional year before released from the cellar to ensure a perfect balance of flavors. This Téte de Cuvée displays a creamy mouthfeel and intricate nuances only extended yeast contact can offer. Aromas of thyme-scented honey and soft citrus notes of lime and tangerine frame the bouquet while flavors of warm spice, cinnamon and caramel make it a perfect match for your holiday table.

When J Vineyards offered us the chance to bring you this “Club J member for a day” promotion, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity. The winery has made the last 50 cases of this highly sought-after sparkling available for a limited time, so act soon to take advantage!

Fresh lemon zest aromas with notes of croissant, vanilla and a wisp of clove. Tempered lemon-lime flavors that soften and turn sweet in the finish.

Rich and stylish. Nutty fig and cinnamon aromas are laced with pear and lead to robust baked apple and spice flavors, with leesy notes, taking on complexity toward the finish. Drink now. 660 cases made. –TF

Winemaker Notes

The 1997 growing season in the Russian River Valley was marked by warm and even weather from bloom until harvest. Crop levels and cluster weights were higher, which led to acid levels that were lower than normal. Fruit flavors and aromas were well-developed, as is evident by the forward notes in the wine. What was an average year for other vineyards in our region, proved to be an exceptional year for ours.

This wine was crafted with an unrelenting passion for producing a wine of great elegance and individuality. All grapes were hand-harvested into small bins and hand loaded as whole clusters into our special Coquard champagne press for a gentle pressing cycle. Vineyard lots and press fractions were kept separate until blending decisions were made in mid-November. 49% Chardonnay, 39% Pinot Noir, 2% Pinot Meunier.
