Having been the Master Winemaker at the famed Beringer winery in Napa for over 32 years, Ed Sbragia has seen and made wine from every great vineyard in Northern California. Like the wines he produces, Ed is a complex compilation of two of winedom’s greatest influences: the famed Beringer and Beaulieu Vineyards winemaking legends Myron Nightingale and Andre Tchelistcheff. All great California winemakers over the last 50 years owe a debt to these pioneering legends that literally made Napa Valley winemaking what it is today, but few have had the benefit or pleasure of working directly for and with both of them. Ed counts himself one of the very lucky few.

Now the winemaster emeritus at Beringer, Sbragia is taking all he has learned through his splendid career and applying it to his own winery, Sbragia Family Vineyards, with his equally talented son Adam. Seeing the infinite potential of a few pristine sites across Napa and Sonoma, Ed and Adam have focused on extremely small production vineyards and varietals that were often the standout blocks in wines he’s made (such as the renowned Beringer Private Reserve), and letting them shine on their own. Though he’s one of the most celebrated winemakers in California history, Ed is conscious of the humility needed in finding spectacular sites and letting the grapes do the talking. Having made some of the most celebrated wines in history will do that to you.

2007 Rancho Del Oso, Cabernet Sauvignon, Howell Mountain, CA
Rancho Del Oso vineyard, which means “ranch of the bear” in Spanish – referring to the red bear that likes to swim in the vineyard’s reservoir, is truly one of the most unique spots in Napa Valley. Sitting high atop the peak of Howell Mountain at 1800 feet, Rancho del Oso is terraced with gentle slopes that keep the grapes in sunshine while surrounding them with cool mountain air throughout the growing season.

From Ed’s own words: “Full of power and grace, this wine leaps from the glass with ripe black fruit aromas – cherries, berries, plums – that dance across the palate at first sip. There’s a chocolate note to the wine as well, and the overall first impression is of maraschino cherries rolled in cocoa powder”. One of the most collectible and sought after wines made in California, be sure to order while supplies last."

The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Rancho del Oso is a winner, with much more volume in terms of the sweetness of the aromatics and beautifully rich blackberry and black currant fruit intermixed with licorice, pen ink, and some spring flowers. The wine has velvety tannins, full-bodied opulence, and a rich, long finish. This should be terrific when it is released next year.

Saturated deep ruby. Aromatic nose combines plum, cassis, dark chocolate, licorice and herbs. Deep dark fruit flavors are complicated by graphite, licorice and dried herbs, plus a hint of minerality. This shows firm acidity for Howell Mountain, along with sound ripeness and expressive aromatic character. Finishes suave and seamless, with a continuing mineral element. Much more satisfying than the 2006.
