The founding of Clos du Val is a great story. Back in 1970, American entrepreneur John Goelet teamed up with the son of a Lafite Rothschild cellarmaster, Bernard Portet to find a new place to make world-class wines. Portet returned an answer two years later after traveling the world and landing in California. Driving around Napa with his arm out of a window, Portet got a feeling for the microclimates and Napa land. He got a true sense of the place and like many after him, fell in love with the Napa Valley.

1972 was their first vintage and was chosen as one of six California Cabernets for the legendary 1976 Paris Tasting. It was at this tasting that California wines shockingly beat out their French counterparts in every category and brought the first international acclaim to the region. That same vintage of the Clos du Val took first place in a rematch 10 years later, proving the ageing prowess of the wines even against wineries who have been producing wine for hundreds of years.

2007 was a near perfect vintage weather-wise and created a small, but powerful crop. This Three Graces is dark and brooding with Tahitian vanilla, luxury spices and black cherries. It could almost be served as dessert with its decadent layers of mocha and cherry jus. The fruit flavors melt into a power-packed finish. Despite its title as a blend, the wine is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cab Franc and Petit Verdot making up the remainder. It calls for spice encrusted meats, rack of lamb, or a beef stew.

"Bernard Portet and his staff create consistently elegant Cabernet Sauvignons that are among the best ageing candidates in the state."

"Aromatically this is really attractive with an initial burst of sweet yet fresh black currant fruit that is quickly augmented by notes of cocoa, leather, mint, earth, oak, and pencil shavings. This is perfumed and shows the warmth of the year yet remains complex and even a bit restrained. A bit blunt read more...on entry with an early hit of tannin that forms a firm foundation for the intense black currant, biter cherry herb, and earth flavors that build in the mouth. With its youthful touch of peach skin on the palate and lovely purity and freshness to the fruit on the backend this remains taut and vivid . The fruit tannins of the palate linger on the long finish which reveals more of a toasty spice note This impresses with elegance and finesse from start to finish. Certainly not a wine made to win competitions, it is dry, and clear, and crisp, a classic Napa Valley Cabernet that harkens back the style of wine that made Napa famous. A seductive wine with a future that should span two decades." Gregory Dal Piaz

Winemaker's Notes

Clos Du Val’s 2007 Three Graces boasts a traditional blend of Bordeaux varietals and is deep purple-black in color with vibrant aromas of ripe black fruit and a hint of vanilla toast, rich dark chocolate and dried herbs. The wine has extraordinary depth punctuated with a powerful entry and concentrated mid-palate, filling the mouth with intense fruit and subtle spice. The finish is long and lingering. With its elegant structure velvety-smooth tannins, this blend is a classic expression of Clos Du Val winemaking. Enjoy now or cellar for at least 10-15 years.
