If we wanted to offer you an in-depth taste of Piedmont, one of the most beautiful wine regions in the world, we'd have to be pretty generous. Because in our minds, a true taste of Piedmont starts with a plane ticket and a week-long villa rental, and ends with a thorough gorging on all things truffled. This is the next best thing though – one of the most delightful half cases of Piedmont red wine we could assemble at a reasonable price. You get two bottles each of an outstanding Barolo, the region's most regal wine (drink one bottle now, hold the other for a year or so); a delicious Nebbiolo from Alba (same grape as Barolo, just a little more approachable); and a Barbera d'Alba, an elegant, smooth, juicy red for pouring any night of the week. All three of these wines are food-friendly and crowd-pleasing – and they just might inspire you to book that plane ticket and villa.

2011 Ordine Di San Giuseppe Nebbiolo D'Alba

Tasting Notes

With aromas of spice and dried flowers, this delightful red glides across the palate with fine tannins that are enveloped in red fruit flavors such as dried strawberries and sour cherries. Pair this wine with mushroom risotto, game, grilled and roasted meats and mature cheeses. While tasty now, this wine can be cellared until 2017.

2009 Costa di Bussia Tenuta Arnulfo Barolo

Tasting Notes

This wine is a little shy on the nose at first sniff, but give it a couple of swirls in the glass, and pow – notes of sweet dried figs, dates, cocoa and spice emerge. (Decant for optimal drinking pleasure.) The tannins are fairly soft and restrained for such a young Barolo, which allows the wine to show its incredible length and fruit complexity. And it still has a very long life ahead of it; this wine will evolve to be a true gem. Pair it with mushrooms and truffles or gamy meats.

2012 San Silvestro Domina Barbera d'Alba

Tasting Notes

Just as with previous vintages, this is an excellent example of the juicy, mouthwatering Barbera grape. Lovely sweet yet tart red fruits on the palate shift to medium tannins and a long, enjoyable finish. Pair this with grilled meats, sausages and hearty pasta dishes.
