Rather than focusing on one specific spot, X Winery and Amicus have strong relationships with some of Napa Valley’s best vineyards to source their grapes, including the famed Truchard, Sangiacomo and Spring Mountain Vineyards.
Amicus (Latin for friend) wines are limited in production employing fruit from beautifully farmed vineyards in the Spring Mountain District of the Napa Valley. The winemaker's vision is to make a wine that’s approachable upon release, but with aging will have the longevity of the greatest wines of the world.
Tasting Note
The 2006 vintage is an artful blend of 40 percent Merlot, 33 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 percent Cabernet Franc and the remainder Petit Verdot. This wine was no doubt restrained and tight on release but has started to open up beautifully revealing a core that is complex and feminine, which I realize may be slightly redundant. Beautiful notes of strawberry jam, dark blackberry and cherry give way to an elegant yet lengthy mouthfeel and a lustrous vanilla-tinged finish. Velvety tannins and good acidity make it an excellent partner with food; try it with filet mignon, spiced pork loin and duck confit.
Spring Mountain, officially established as an AVA (American Viticulture Area) in 1993, was described 25 years ago by a prominent wine writer as “probably more responsible than any other Napa hillside for creating the mystique of ‘mountain grapes.’ ”
This mountain appellation is defined by vineyards that range from small to smaller, often hand-tilled on terraces and sloping meadows, and wineries hidden from view among dark forests and steep winding roads. Over the years, despite its limited space and remoteness, the appellation has produced an abundance of wines acclaimed worldwide for the unmistakable intense flavor and delicate, balanced tannins that are now the signature of Spring Mountain wines.
The appellation lies above the town of St. Helena on the eastern slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains that separate Napa Valley from Sonoma Valley and the Santa Rosa Plain. Encompassed within its bounds are about 8,600 acres, of which about 1,000 are planted to vineyards. Currently the region has just over 30 vineyards and wineries including Schweiger, Pride, Cain, Juslyn, Paloma, Behrens, Keenan, Terra Valentine and countless other iconic brands.
