3 x 2010 Le Bonnat Bordeaux Sauvignon Blanc Blend

White Bordeaux is a unique beauty. Few wine regions on the planet are known for crafting elegant blends of white varieties that range from easy-sipping aperitifs to more complex creatures capable of aging for decades.

White Bordeaux wines are some of the world's zippiest and most refreshing wines out there. Château Le Bonnat lies in the center of the Graves ("grahv") region near the hamlet of Jeansotte. Its white is a blend of 60 percent Sémillon and 40 percent Sauvignon Blanc. The Sémillon brings weight and ripe stone-fruit flavors to the mix, while the Sauvignon Blanc counterbalances with bright acidity, citrus fruit and mineral notes.

The owner of Le Bonnat, Denis Lesgourgues, called 2010 "one of the most well-balanced vintages from the property." This year the estate aged half of the Sémillon in oak barrels, giving richness and creaminess to its texture. This white's appealing fresh fruitiness makes it balanced and enjoyable right now, but the high proportion of Sémillon will allow it to develop for another couple of years. This is perfect for cocktail hour and a variety of cuisines.

Tasting Note
Characteristics of Sauvignon and Sémillon are apparent in the nose and on the palate. Aromas of honey, toast and vanilla are complemented by hints of grass, ripe citrus and tropical fruit. On the palate, the weight of the Sémillon is married with vanilla, toast notes and the crisp, lemony acidity and peach-tinged freshness of Sauvignon. It is a lush wine with very ripe fruit flavors and a smooth, creamy finish, making it a perfect complement to grilled fish and lobster, goat cheese, roast chicken and game birds. Drink this now through 2013. (12.5% ABV)

More About Graves

"The Graves, and in particular the outskirts of Bordeaux, the Grabas de Burdeus, is the birthplace of claret. In the Middle Ages, much of the light claret dispatched in such quantity to England was grown in these vineyards within easy distance of the quayside; the Médoc was largely marshland. Château Pape-Clément is Bordeaux's first named château, while Haut-Brion was the first New French Claret noted in London, by Samuel Pepys, in 1663. Thomas Jefferson noted that in the late 18th century 'Grave' wines were considered the finest Bordeaux had to offer. It was presumably this historic fame which had Château Haut-Brion, Graves' most famous property, included with the finest Médoc châteaux in the famous classification in 1855."
