If you follow in your parents' professional footsteps, a crowning moment of your career must be taking something they began and breathing new life into it. Such is the story with today's wine. It's a labor of love by Oscar Renteria, son of legendary viticulturist Salvador Renteria.

The name Renteria is often mentioned in the same breath as other icons of Napa Valley. It is in part because of Salvador that labels such as Beaulieu Vineyards, Clos Pegase and Silverado have become as recognizable as they are today. Back in 1974, Salvador planted Q Hill Vineyard. As it was planted on phylloxera-susceptible stock, though, the vineyard was abandoned in the early 1990s and earmarked for replanting. Oscar recalls his father talking about the wonderful grapes that grew on this parcel, and started pruning the vines to make them productive again for the 1997 harvest. The results of his meticulous work, along with the winemaking mastery of Mondavi veteran Karen Culler, are obvious in this rambunctious, albeit refined, decade-old wine. Its nose is only just now starting to show hints of maturity, and the tannins guarantee it another five years of development. You'll want to sip this wine over the course of a long, languorous dinner. Now is an exciting time in this wine's life, and you won't want to miss it.

Tasting Note

The love father and son share with Q Hill is obvious with this bottling. The deep ruby color remains resilient from the core and only lightens at the very edge of the rim. The wine is highly perfumed with sweet roses and vanilla, and the palate is full and bright with cherry and cedar, flavors that linger on the lengthy finish. The wine opened immediately, but is worthy of decanting for an hour. I paired it with roasted chicken and cedar-plank-smoked salmon, but it would stand up equally to a grilled steak or quail.
