6 x 2010 San Silvestro Domina Barbera d'Alba

Although the Barbera grape is now grown across the world, it definitely reaches its full potential in the Langhe hills of central Piedmont, around the market town of Alba. Piedmontese Barberas are loved for their combination of juicy, red-fruit flavors, vibrancy and smooth tannins, that together make them such good pairings with everyday – as well as upscale – Italian cuisine.

San Silvestro is the brainchild of the Sartirano family, which has four generations of experience producing wine in and around Piedmont's Barolo region. Over the years, the small family business, today run by cousins Paolo and Guido Sartirano, has expanded beyond the local market. I'm excited to bring this tiny U.S. allocation of San Silvestro Barberas to you.

Tasting Note

A soft, attractive nose of raspberry, strawberry and other red fruits is the first indication of how juicy and enjoyable this red is. On the palate, the red berry notes are rounded out by some oak and toast characteristics, as well as an attractive earthiness. This example has vibrant acidity that will be perfect with everything from fondue or stews, to lasagna or pizza. It is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. Enjoy this now through 2014.
