2 x 2007 Outcast Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon

I have to admit, the Outcast label sucked me in. Despite my sales and marketing background, I fell for the oldest trick in the book and was drawn to the rich and saturated colors of the label. Then I was told the winery's story and tasted its wine. I immediately envisioned Lot18 members sitting around dinner tables with friends and family, discussing the whimsical label and enjoying this incredibly delicious offering.

I have to give a nod to the unusual nature of Outcast. The three founders don't have a history in the industry, and the blends they put together are not always traditional. Where they shy away from tradition, they embrace creativity and quality. Their formula, however unconventional, has worked extremely well.

This wine is well worth the spend for the conversation it will spark alone. Pull out a bottle next time you have some friends over, and see how long it takes them to comment on the label. Then pour a glass and make their night.

Tasting Note
This is a rambunctious wine with no regard for convention. It's a blend of 78 percent Cabernet, 17 percent Syrah and 5 percent Mourvèdre. If you are a fan of rich and fruit-dominant wines that deliver high on the deliciousness scale, this colorful bottle is for you. Juicy dark cherry, plum and currant are complemented by dusty chocolate, wild flowers and spice. The texture is lush and exposes a good amount of food-friendly acidity and dusty tannins. This is a crowd-pleaser style of wine, meant for casual drinking and conversation around a dinner table full of beef stew, burgers, pizza, pasta or lasagna. Drink this wine now and for the next few years. (14.91% ABV)

More About Outcast's Label

When you get your hands on a few bottles, take a look at the image of the horse and lone rider on the label. It's meant to symbolize the vision of Outcast: to seek rare wine gems, wherever they might be, and make them accessible to all of us. If you take a close look at the label, you might discover several "hidden" images. If you can find all five, let the winery know on their Facebook page, where they promise a surprise awaits.

More About Outcast

The story of Caravel/Outcast starts in summer of 2008. Three friends from three distant places come together around a shared passion for California wine and decide to embark upon a journey together. In an industry with large players and abundant household wine brands, their newly established company had its work cut out. After many days of convivial repartee, they went to work and started planning their first wine release in the summer of 2010. Caravel, their inaugural effort, was received with excitement and exceptional success – the 2007 Cabernet and White Wine Blend sold out in only a few short months.

Given that Caravel was a success in its own right, it became time to ratchet up the stakes and venture into a premium space with Outcast. Having visited upwards of 250 of California's best wineries, the team began seeking choice grapes and wines and realized that they could create something very special in showcasing the best of California varietals while maintaining a heightened sense of terroir and value.
