Self-proclaimed winemaking underdogs, Vinum owners Richard Bruno and Chris Condos consistently produce high-value wine at remarkable prices. The 2009 Petite Sirah is no exception. The variety has become popular in California field blends, but leave it to Condos and Bruno to bottle it on its own and show the grape's capacity to bring enjoyment and pleasure to the palate. This wine is another win from Vinum.
This wine has an inky, teeth-staining plum color, and offers up mixed berries and pie-filling flavors on the palate that go down all too easily. Surprising notes of French oak vanillin and cassis up the sophistication factor. Steaks and sautéed mushrooms with a healthy dose of pepper would stand up well to this wine, as would a lovely chocolate ganache. You can't buy too much of it, as it will hold up for at least five years.
