Today's offer is Pinot Noir for the people, a food-conscious wine for any occasion, from restaurants to the kitchen table. Mouton Noir, French for "black sheep," is a West Coast producer of distinctive "garage" wines. With Burgundy as its muse, Mouton Noir began producing wines for New York City restaurants in an attempt to provide a more fun alternative to the stoic, white-collar, snooty wines of generations past.
Despite having a successful career in investment banking, founder Andre Mack decided to leave his desk job to pursue his passion for wine. While working as a sommelier in San Antonio, Mack was awarded the prestigious title of Best Young Sommelier in America by the highly-regarded Chaîne des Rôtisseurs. This recognition earned him the opportunity to work as a sommelier at Thomas Keller's world-renowned French Laundry, and eventually as head sommelier at Keller's equally famed Per Se in New York, where he consulted with Keller on menu and pairing development.
Winemaking was always a dream of Mack's, and it finally came to fruition in 2004, when he founded Mouton Noir Wines in a California warehouse. Throughout his career, Mack has forged relationships with luminary growers and vintners with whom he currently creates his wines. His O.P.P. Pinot Noir comes from some of Oregon's most notable vineyards and AVAs, such as Roserock Vineyard in Eola-Amity Hills, Hyland Vineyard in McMinnville, and Kalita Vineyard in Yamhill-Carlton. Today's feature is a gorgeous blend of these three vineyards at an outrageous member price.
Though the label presents a tongue-in-cheek approach to wine, the juice is very serious. I recommend an hour's worth of decanting for this youthful wine. After aeration, the wine flaunts bright and juicy red and black fruit, which leaps from the glass with an almost Burgundian sensibility. This Pinot has a garnet red rim color, with intense clarity. High-toned Bing cherry, gingerbread spice, forest floor and herbs are accompanied by bright acidity, with unusually supple texture and delicate tannins. The wine presents the best of both worlds: ripe, New World fruit and Old World complexity. The wine craves tender roast pork loin or veal chops.
