3 x 2007 Tolaini Valdisanti Tuscany Cabernet Blend
The 2007 Valdisanti is not a beauty just in the context of Tuscany. It's a great wine, period. Any red-wine lover will be impressed by its almost perfectly balanced structure and polished flavors.
The Tolaini estate was founded in 1998 by Pierluigi Tolaini, who, after running a successful trucking and logistics company in the United States for more than 40 years, returned to Italy with a goal of producing the best Tuscan wines possible.
Valdisanti is one of four wines that Tolaini produces. A blend of 75 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 percent Sangiovese and 5 percent Cabernet Franc, the 2007 Valdisanti spent 16 months aging in 70 percent new French oak and another 12 months in bottle before release. The wine is drinking beautifully now, showing great complexity of flavors and aromas, firm yet well-integrated tannic structure and vivacious acidity. It is not often that a polished and stunning wine like this becomes available at such an accessible price.
The 2007 Valdisanti invites you to the glass with perfumes of raspberry coulis and ripe black cherry, laced with vanilla, licorice and tobacco leaf. The palate is silky and beautifully balanced, with rich berry flavors, bright acidity and fine-grained tannins. The new-oak flavor has had sufficient time to integrate during bottle aging, adding a layer of richness with vanilla and toast notes that carry this wine to a long and deep finish. It's seriously delicious. This wine makes a great accompaniment to duck breast or lamb loin. Drink it now, or hold until 2016.
"Redolent with heady scents of dark fruit, licorice, leather and smoke. Balsamic notes develop in the glass, adding further layers of complexity and depth. This finishes with a joyful exuberance that is impossible not to admire. Anticipated maturity: 2014 to 2022."
—Antonio Galloni (Aug. 2011)
"A chewy and layered red, with blackberry and toasty oak. Though there’s a little too much new oak, this is rich and impressive. Best after 2010."
—James Suckling (Oct. 2010)
