6 x 2008 Château Lamothe Bordeaux Première Cuvée
Château Lamothe is known for crafting great Bordeaux at accessible prices, without compromising quality. When I worked at New York City’s Waverly Inn, the wine was long served by the glass.
Located in the commune of Haux, Château Lamothe sits picturesquely atop a tall sunny slope. The château was built in the 17th century from limestone quarried on the property, leaving massive caves 100 feet underground that are cool, quiet and perfect for cellaring wine. The 2008 Lamothe rested in these caves for 12 months to allow its youthful qualities to mature and harmonize.
Lamothe’s Première Cuvée is a blend of 60 percent Merlot, 30 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 10 percent Cabernet Franc from vines grown in clay, gravel and limestone soils in the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux. The 2008 vintage is particularly notable. It was a small harvest, leading to good concentration of fruit and well-layered wines.
The 2008 Château Lamothe Bordeaux Première Cuvée is a bright ruby color with generous black fruit flavors of plum, currant and cherry. Fresh herbs, coffee, mocha and licorice round out the palate with moderate acidity and plush, velvety tannins giving way to lingering finish. Drink now or cellar an additional three to four years. Pair with smoked duck breast and green lentils, lamb sausages or aged hard cheeses.
