R. Croft Freeform Decanter

This feather-light, whimsical crystal decanter is one of Ravenscroft's most popular pieces. So when the opportunity came along to feature it on Lot18 – particularly at this price – I jumped at it.

Some people save their decanters for mature wines, but decanting benefits young and old vintages alike. Younger wines evolve an become more readily drinkable, while older wines can blossom. Every wine enthusiast should have at least one decanter, and this distinctive piece is an approachable start to a collection at incredible value.

Stephen Falango founded Ravenscroft over a decade ago to create elegant crystal for discerning wine aficionados. He succeeded – and he made an important improvement: The crystal is lead-free.

Ravenscroft's feat is often underappreciated. Beautiful, lead-free crystal is more difficult than leaded alternative – it is considerably more viscous, meaning that it must be heated to a higher and more challenging working temperature for glassblowing. And pesky air bubbles are harder to prevent.

The Freeform reflects the coupling of the craftsmanship of Ravenscroft designers with their desire to create an accessible piece with a free-spirited form. This decanter practically invites you to have fun while you sip its wine. Santé!

Katy Andersen studied cheese in Italy as a Fulbright Scholar before joining Lot18 as the Gourmet Food Specialist. Katy grew up on an organic farm, surrounded by a garden, an heirloom apple orchard and heritage livestock. While at Princeton University, she founded the Greening Princeton Farmers Market and the Princeton Slow Food chapter. Most recently, Katy was co-president of the Wine & Cuisine Society at the Harvard Business School. She was also a member of the winning finalist team of the Bordeaux blind-tasting competition at Lafite in 2011.
